It was a long keep dream of us to create something «big» in Ribera del Duero. There were already so many producers and it was our goal to find something small, special and unique. For a long time we were looing around for the perfect grapes, vineyards and local partner. Mauro Bergesio, associate of Amphora Wineries brought in 2014 the right components together. Beside bringing the best Barriques of his Tonnollerie “Selmer” We as a experienced winemaking team, and our new partner Miguel Calvo a local wine grower with his finest grapes.
Together with Miguel Calvo and his great vineyards, Mauro Bergesio and his famous French barrels «Selmer» and Daniel Caro who defined the vilification process the created the 3 different wines of “Cuarto de Luna”. 2014 the vinified the first wine called «Edition limitada» that became a great success. 2015 the entry level wine «Baricca» and the top Cuvée «Colección Privada» where made. All this 3 wines reflect in the way all great elements of this region and stands for and independent Style and class. Even in their youth they offer great drinking pleasure but can mature and grow perfectly for many years.
For many generation the Calvo familiy where growing wines. But for all the years they have sold this precious goods to famous wineries in the region. 15 years ago Miguel Calvo built a new bodega and started to produce is own wine. In the meantime the Bodegas y Viñedos Alto Sotillo grow grapes of the Tinta del Pais varietal on 30 Hektar, some of the older than 100 years. Every single vine is groomed with lots of passion to get first class quality grapes in the end. The bodega is a simple and in the classic castillian style built very functional Winery that has been built with the help of the entire family for many years. The whole Calvo family supports this beautiful project with all the heart and time.
The wines and some of them over 100 years old grow on an altitude between 500-700 meters above sealevel on pure soil. All of them treated with care and passion to enhance the quality.
Strict selection and very low yields define the harvest that is made manually. Thereupon the grapes received a cool maceration and a long and soft fermentation. After that the wine is aged in french barrels. Cuarto de luna uses the best barriques of the famous Tonnollerie "Selmer".
